EWB-APC has undertaken review and progression of a project to plan for and provide alternatives to the current pump setting in the event that the level of Lake Malawi continues to fall.
KWUA operates submersible pumps that feed the water supply, treatment, and distribution system. In recent years, the level of Lake Malawi during dry season has dropped very close to the current pump location on the lake bed. The pumps have previously been moved out further in the lake by KWUA to address this risk. Further loss of lake level places the entire KWUA operation at risk. Because this issue is a “show-stopper” for the current water supply system, this project was chosen as the first priority for the EWB-APC team to address.
