KWUA Address Risk to Pump Intake due to Lower Lake Levels

EWB-APC has undertaken a review of alternatives to the current pump setting in the event that the level of Lake Malawi continues to fall.

KWUA operates submersible pumps that feed the water supply, treatment, and distribution system. In recent years, the level of Lake Malawi during dry season has dropped very close to the pump intake location. The pumps were at one time moved out further in the lake by KWUA to address this risk. Further loss of lake level could place the entire KWUA operation at risk.

Preliminary design work has been done to assess alternatives. Future changes will be considered in conjunction with findings from the KWUA Capacity Study.

Note: As of June 2020, this project was placed on hold to prioritize the KWUA Energy Supply Improvement Project which was identified as the current highest priority need for KWUA based on the Capacity Study Analysis.
